CMS and Lord of the Ants

CMS and Lord of the Ants

The other night I watched one of the NOVA series called Lord of the Ants, the story about Ed Wilson’s rise in fame as the leading world authority on Ants and how the boy would change our view on the origins of life and the structure that supports it. As a leading Entomologist, Ed Wilson has done more for science and technology then most would ever know.

Ed Wilson's dream of listing every living species on the planet is now starting to be realized. The Smithsonian, Harvard University and several other institutions are pooling their resources to create a complete Encyclopedia of Life (http://www.eol.org/), with over 1.8 million entries. Naturalists will be able to compare minute differences and to establish the evolutionary pedigrees of any form of life. For Ed Wilson, it is the culmination of a lifetime's fascination with the vast diversity of life, the "macroscope" that he always wanted to go with his microscope.

Federations and Distributed Docbases

I am often asked a variety of questions regarding; How should we structure our enterprise Documentum
foundation to best service our business?

Other Typical questions consist of;

  • What is the best way to manage content?
  • Should we create individual Docbase’s for each customer unit or use one large Docbase?
  • How do we store documents in different locations and still maintain control? There are many more questions on this subject so we will explain at a high level the architecture of Federations and Distributed Docbase models.

Federations

The description of a Federation as described by Documentum is: Multiple repositories linked together across logical and geographic boundaries that form virtual repositories. Immediate access to information is enabled as content is physically distributed but logically integrated within the enterprise. Additionally, these federations provide the enterprise with unlimited capacity to manage large volumes of digital assets as units, including automatic synchronization of those repositories, thereby reducing the administrative overhead that it would ordinarily take to individually manage multiple content repositories.

What is a Docbase and why do I need one

In 1859 gold was discovered in the state of Colorado. This was the beginning of a booming economy and a need born as to where to store the new gold being extracted. There were similar problems in California and Alaska during their gold rush periods.

Eventually the United States government established the Denver Mint as a gold repository and minting operation. The regional banks held gold in various forms from dust to coins in there vaults. To keep track of the gold the banks assigned bank accounts to its depositors. The information about each ounce of gold was tallied in to bound books. The account books as we call them today kept track of the who, what, where and how about the gold being stored in the banks vault (repository).

Using Acronyms

Tuesday, 29 December 2009 21:23 Written by Troy Martin

As always with every technology there are abbreviations and acronyms to describe in short hand a particular subject name. One of the hardest habits to break when speaking to people about technology is not inserting these in to our conversation. As we walk the line between the users of the systems and those behind the technology managing or creating them, there is a time and place to use them.

Writing information about a given technology and trying to stay within the boundaries of this form of communication without getting caught in the acronym game can be difficult. So there is no confusion and we can keep with the theme of this site, we keep it simple.
