SoftMaker Office for Free!

E-mail Print PDF
SoftMaker OfficeWhen ever possible we try to scour up tips-n-tricks to help you get more done for less. With so so many small companies trying to take on  Microsoft it is hard to know what product is good or not.

I am a firm believer that innovation is based on competition. That is why I am a big believer in open source software. Let’s face it there is no free lunch. Someone is picking up the tab and there always seems to be a catch.

Now we have to also consider is the product being introduced good or is it crap disguised with a fancy cover. Over the years I have seen many products come and go. I started writing on my first computer using Word Star 1.0 and then later came Word Perfect around the time Microsoft introduced Word.

In my view Word was easier to use but it lacked the power of Word Perfect. And like the Dodo bird Word Star and its predecessor eventually went instinct or was swallowed up by another company to have it repackaged into something different.

Crack open iPhone for Geeks

Apple iPhone 3GEvery once in a while I read an article and wonder who cares! Well obviously there has to be someone out there who might. Take this one - Cracking open Apple’s iPhone 3G.
CNET Networks site TechRepublic runs a regular series called "Cracking Open" in which it takes a look inside a variety of gadgets. CNET News is publishing this excerpt of a photo gallery that takes on Apple's iPhone 3G. For those curious geeks who have to see inside what the iPhone guts look like.
Personally I don’t really care what is on the inside of my iPhone so long as it works. I have been labeled a geek but knowing how all the internal parts go together does nothing for me.

In another developing story ATT announced recently that they are going to allow tethering your iPhone to your computer. This is one feature that I would use. However ATT also announced it will charge an additional $30 per month for the service with a 5 Meg cap per month. Sorry but at $30 per month for the broadband usage I am going to pass. As much as I would use this feature I would rather spend the $50 per month for a dedicated card that plugs into my laptop.

Taking great photos

E-mail Print PDF

Grasshopper by Steve Creek, Lavaca, AZEveryday I scour the web looking for stories that readers may find interesting and one of the things I look for is photos. A good photo is worth thousands of words in defining the story as well as fully explaining the event.

The simple DSLR camera is now pretty commonplace. In the old days you pulled out your little Browning or Kodak or even Polaroid and zapped your photo. When the roll of film was full you dropped it off at your local photo processing center and you waited a week to get your prints back.

Now DSLR’s are everywhere. They are for the most part standard issue with all major cell phones. Inexpensive and simple DSLR’s have replaced the Polaroid and for those serious photography buffs you can purchase DSLR’s that surpass your Nikon or Canon 35 MM favorite in quality and performance.

Regardless of what camera you are using, there is a knack for taking the right photo. Simple adjustments can make the difference in capturing a great moment or loosing the shot forever.

Dave Johnson of PC World has written a great article and gives 5 tips for taking that perfect photo. Dave writes - “Follow this simple advice to turn good photos into truly great ones.

A lot of photos arrive in my inbox each week, entries for our weekly Hot Pics contest. I feel honored to be privy to so many slices of my readers' lives. I see artistically crafted vistas taken on vacation; silly moments with kids and pets; special events like birthdays and proms; and photographic experiments captured on lazy Saturday mornings. Sometimes the entries are even inspired by tips or suggestions from this very newsletter.

Of course, only one person can win the Hot Pic photo contest each week, and there are some common characteristics that separate great photos from good ones. This week, I tell you how to avoid the five most common pitfalls. Work on these, and you stand a good chance of making all of your photos look better.”

Creation - Yes or No

E-mail Print PDF

As long as I can remember there has been the discussion around creation. Did God create the universe in 7 days or did we all ooze out of the primordial soup?

In my view this question is better left to the scholars. Because I don’t think I have enough information to make a decision one way or the other. The reason why is both sides of the equation contradict each other. In other words I find it difficult to believe either way. Of course I have my own beliefs and don’t believe the web is a forum to share.

However for the sake of argument I will pass on the story and let you decide.

Wired Science Forgotten Experiment May Explain Origins of Life

By Brandon Keim, October 16, 2008 | 6:49:14 PmCategories: Chemistry

“Originally considered a dud, an old volcano-in-a-bottle experiment designed to mimic conditions that may have brewed the components of life might have been right on target.
After reanalyzing the results of unpublished research conducted by Stanley Miller in 1953, chemists realized that his experiment had actually produced a wealth of amino acids — the protein foundation of life.
Miller is famed for the results of experiments on amino acid formation in a jar filled with methane, hydrogen and ammonia — his version of the primordial soup. However, his estimates of atmospheric composition were eventually considered inaccurate. The experiment became regarded as a general rather than useful example of how the first organic molecules may have assembled.”

MySpace Music makes its debut

E-mail Print PDF

CNET By Greg SandovalIf your not an avid Apple fan and you are looking for an alternative to iTunes, MySpace may have the solution you are looking for.

"That's when MySpace is expected to launch MySpace Music, the music service formed by the world's second largest social network and all four of the largest recording companies, executives from the News Corp.-owned social network said Wednesday.

MySpace executives said the EMI Group, which took much longer to join the venture than its three competitors, will make its entire music library available to the venture. MySpace has also partnered with Sony ATV, which partners with indie distributors like The Orchard, Alternative Distribution Alliance, Caroline, RED, and Fontana.

A MySpace Music playlist. (Credit: MySpace)The service represents the most significant challenge to Apple--at least in terms of firepower--in some time. This is the first time the top labels have all joined in taking a stake in an iTunes competitor.

Among the many challenges the service faces is that it offers no hardware solution. Apple can provide everything a music listener needs--hardware and software. MySpace hasn't attached itself to any popular music player, primarily because the iPod has such a huge market share. MySpace will sell songs, which will come from Amazon, in the MP3 format. This means they are not locked in digital rights management and will play on the iPod and most other devices.

MySpace has long been an Internet concert hall, where bands went to market their wares to the Web, and that's a big part of the reason why the Los Angeles-based site rose to fame in 2004. According to MySpace, 65 percent of its users already have streaming music on their profiles and six billion songs are played every month. On the flip side, neither MySpace nor News Corp., has much experience in music retail; consider that Apple has zoomed past Wal-Mart to music retail's top spot. Some critics have said that something like MySpace Music should have been in place on the site years ago.

But after reviewing the site with the help of Steve Pearman, MySpace's senior vice president of product strategy, it's clear the site has a few things going for it.

The coolest thing I saw was the site's streaming music player. A person can search for music from all four major labels, drag as many as 100 songs into a playlist area and then listen to complete songs without paying a dime. Of course, the music is restricted to PCs and can't be downloaded to mobile devices. Sites like Imeem and Last.fm (owned by CBS Interactive, which publishes CNET News) also have significant head starts in this area, and streaming playlists are integral to the distribution strategy at iLike, another music start-up that has a very close relationship with MySpace rival Facebook.

What MySpace doesn't do is send users to another site to buy. On MySpace Music, the music listed on an artist's profile page will have "Add" and "Buy" buttons. A user can either hit add to include a song to a playlist or hit buy to instantly purchase the music. Amazon users won't even need to create a new purchasing profile. They can use their existing accounts.

The inaugural advertisers on MySpace Music are McDonalds, State Farm, Toyota, and Sony Pictures Entertainment--which will, conveniently, be advertising on all MySpace Music playlists for a week with ads for its forthcoming teen flick, Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist. That's just a little too perfect.

In addition to advertising support, marketing campaigns, (Toyota will be giving away free songs on Tuesdays, for example) and the Amazon MP3 partnership, MySpace Music will also sell ringtones through a partnership with Jamster. Some speculated that concert tickets and merchandise would also be sold somehow through the store, but that's not present at launch.
MySpace now has more than 120 million users worldwide, according to ComScore.
